A 30-year-old Indian woman named Shabari has opened up about her decision to leave behind what many would consider a dream life in Canada and return to India. In a viral Instagram video, she discusses the hidden costs of working abroad, challenging the glamorous narrative often portrayed on social media.
The Decision to Return
Shabari, who studied and worked in Canada on a work visa, faced frequent questions about her choice to move back. She explained that while her life appeared fancy from the outside, the reality was far lonelier. 'People don't post, say, at the end of the day, how tired they are when they come home,' she said.
The Struggle Behind the Scenes
Food became a symbol of her struggle. She described meal-prepping in bulk and freezing portions to avoid cooking after exhausting shifts. 'I started eating oats because that was the easiest breakfast to make,' she recalled. The emotional burden of hiding her struggles from her family added to the isolation. 'You can't tell this to your family, because they'll start worrying about you.'
Value of Relationships
Shabari noted that facing difficulties in a foreign country made her value family and relationships much more. The video resonated with many, garnering nearly 150,000 views. Comments flooded in, with one user saying, 'What you said is true... what people see and post on Instagram is diff... behind each and everything there is a struggle.' Another added, 'It's not a step back. It's progress. I did the same eight months ago and moved back home.'
