IMD Extends Fog & Cold Day Alert in Bihar Till Jan 3; Gaya Visibility Drops to 50m
Bihar Fog Alert Extended Till Jan 3, Gaya Visibility 50m

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) in Patna has prolonged its severe weather advisory for Bihar, with the alert for dense fog and isolated cold day conditions now valid until Wednesday, January 3. The forecast indicates continued challenging conditions across the state as the new year begins.

District-Wise Warnings and Temperature Dip

Northern districts like West Champaran and Sitamarhi are under a persistent cold day alert, while the south-western regions, including Kaimur and Rohtas, grapple with dense fog. Meteorologists predict reduced visibility will impact most districts, including Patna and Nalanda, around New Year's Eve. A slight respite is expected as temperatures may gradually rise by 1 to 2 degrees Celsius over the next four days.

Data from the past 24 hours on Sunday revealed a dry state under the grip of cold. Jehanabad experienced a "severe cold day," with similar cold day conditions noted in Gaya, Buxar, and Aurangabad. Rajgir recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature at 6.8 degrees Celsius, while Sheikhpura saw the highest maximum at 18.7 degrees Celsius. Gaya faced the most severe visibility issues, with it dropping to a mere 50 metres.

Patna Residents Adapt to the Chill

As the mercury drops, citizens in Patna are modifying their daily habits to mitigate health risks associated with the cold wave. Pinky, a Fatuha resident, explained her dietary adjustments: "I consume warm water consistently to avoid throat infections and prefer rotis over rice to help sustain body heat." She also emphasized the inclusion of seasonal green vegetables.

In Patliputra, Rishab Kumar turns to traditional home remedies. "My wife prepares ajwain-water for us to drink nightly. It strengthens immunity and provides warmth," Kumar shared. The early and intense winter has also spurred a surge in shopping for winter clothing.

Changing Routines and Unprepared Visitors

Riya Gupta, while shopping for hoodies, mentioned she has switched entirely to using hot water for bathing. Her mother, Sudha, has adopted a different approach, bathing with cold water but only every other day to prevent falling ill.

The cold has taken even long-absent visitors by surprise. Divya Kanodia, visiting Patna from Bengaluru after six years, found herself unprepared. "I had to buy warm clothes immediately after arriving. We now consume more hot drinks and soup and focus on keeping our living spaces well-heated," she stated.

Despite the anticipated slight warming trend, the IMD's extended warning underscores the need for continued caution. Residents are advised to limit early morning travel, wear adequate layers, and follow health-conscious practices to navigate the persistent fog and cold day conditions safely until mid-week.
