Burash Mahotsav in Pithoragarh Aims to Revive Conservation of Rhododendron Trees

A day-long Burash Mahotsav was successfully held in Munsyari, Pithoragarh, on Saturday, dedicated to raising awareness about the conservation of the Burash tree, scientifically known as Rhododendron arboreum. The event was organized by the Research Range, Pithoragarh, at the Rhododendron Demonstration and Conservation Centre located in Balati Band. This initiative brought together students and teachers from Govt Inter College, Munsyari, along with villagers from the Harkot Van Panchayat, creating a collaborative effort to highlight the tree's significance.

Focus on Cultural and Ecological Revival

Narendra Kumar, the ranger of the research wing, emphasized that the festival's primary goal is to revive the cultural, economic, religious, and ecological importance of this multipurpose tree. "The awareness programme marked the first step toward regenerating the importance of the Burash tree and promoting conservation of other local biodiversity," he stated. This event serves as a foundational move to educate the community and inspire action for environmental preservation.

Community Engagement and Educational Activities

Khusal Harkotiya, the sarpanch of Harkot Van Panchayat, pointed out that while residents and students often admire the beauty of Burash flowers, many are unaware of the broader benefits the tree offers, including its flowers and pollen. "Burash is our natural heritage, and it is our duty to conserve it for future generations," he remarked, underscoring the need for sustained conservation efforts.

As part of the awareness campaign, students actively participated in various educational activities:

  • Writing essays and speeches to express their views on conservation.
  • Creating posters to visually communicate the importance of the Burash tree.
  • Sharing personal experiences through the programme 'Meri Burash Kahani,' as highlighted by Sangeeta Joshi, a junior research fellow.

The event culminated with a 2km 'Burash Trail Walk,' which involved students, teachers, and villagers, fostering a sense of unity and commitment to the cause.

Empowering Youth for Future Conservation

Lavraj Kumar, a student participant, shared that the activities instilled a strong sense of responsibility and empowerment. "All these activities fostered a sense of responsibility and empowered us to take part in Burash conservation. We will continue to work towards preserving the tree and local biodiversity," he said. This reflects the event's success in engaging the younger generation and encouraging ongoing efforts to protect the region's natural resources.
