Goa Minister Directs Systematic Restoration of River Sal with Technology Focus
Water Resources Department Minister Subhash Shirodkar has issued a directive to officials to commence the comprehensive cleaning and restoration of the River Sal in a methodical and systematic manner. The minister emphasized the critical importance of employing appropriate and advanced technologies to rehabilitate the river and return it to its original pristine condition. This initiative follows a detailed inspection of the river by the minister, who personally assessed the current state of the waterway.
Addressing Key Pollution Issues and Sewage Discharge
During his inspection, Minister Subhash Shirodkar specifically instructed officials to tackle pressing issues that have severely impacted the river's health. A primary concern highlighted was the direct discharge of untreated sewage into the River Sal, which has contributed significantly to its pollution levels. The minister underscored that protecting this vital water body, often regarded as the lifeline of the Salcete region, requires not only administrative action but also robust public participation and cooperation.
Emphasis on Civic Responsibility and Public Involvement
Shirodkar strongly stressed the necessity of cultivating stronger civic responsibility among local residents to ensure environmentally responsible practices are adopted and maintained. He noted that the matter of escalating pollution in the River Sal has been repeatedly raised and discussed in the Goa Legislative Assembly, prompting his visit to the site. This inspection was conducted following a formal request from Venzy Viegas, the MLA of Benaulim, who urged the minister to assess the situation firsthand and take immediate corrective measures.
Previous Efforts and Simple Initiatives Yield Positive Results
MLA Venzy Viegas reported that through his own persistent efforts and community engagement, several stretches of the River Sal that were previously affected by rampant garbage dumping and open defecation have already been successfully cleared and cleaned. He added that simple, yet effective initiatives implemented at the local level have helped significantly curb such detrimental practices, demonstrating the potential impact of grassroots actions. The combined focus on technological solutions, administrative enforcement, and public awareness aims to create a sustainable framework for the long-term preservation and revival of the River Sal.
