Gurgaon Gripped by Winter Chill as IMD Issues Yellow Alert
Residents of Gurgaon woke up to a distinctly cold and overcast morning, with the sun remaining hidden behind thick clouds throughout the entire day. The subdued temperatures and lack of sunshine created a persistent wintry atmosphere across the city.
IMD's Cold Wave and Fog Warning
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for a cold wave and dense fog at isolated places in the region. The weather office specifically warned that colder nights are likely over the next two days, indicating a continuation of the chilly conditions.
Despite a noticeable rise in night temperatures compared to previous days, IMD data confirms that wintry conditions prevailed through the daylight hours. The city's Krishi Vigyan Kendra (KVK) automatic weather station recorded a minimum temperature of 13.2°C, which represents an increase of 5.2°C from Monday's reading.
Temperature Details and Rainfall
Maximum temperatures in Gurgaon hovered between 17°C and 17.5°C at the city's two automatic weather stations, remaining significantly below normal levels for this time of year. Adding to the chill factor, the city received approximately 3mm of rainfall in the past 24 hours, attributed to the influence of an active western disturbance.
Across Haryana, daytime temperatures remained suppressed, with IMD noting that average maximum temperatures were about 3.5°C below normal on Tuesday. Bhiwani emerged as the coldest place in the state with a temperature of 5.5°C, while Nuh in Mewat recorded the highest daytime temperature at 19.8°C.
Weather Systems and Forecast
IMD meteorologists attribute the gloomy weather conditions to a cyclonic circulation associated with a western disturbance over Jammu and adjoining areas. Another fresh western disturbance is likely to affect northwest India starting from the night of January 30.
The weather office forecasts light to moderate rainfall at many places in Haryana on February 1, with isolated showers expected on January 31 and February 3. Additionally, thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds of 30–40 kmph are likely at isolated places on February 1.
Extended Alert and Commuter Advisory
Under the ongoing yellow alert, IMD has warned of cold wave conditions and dense fog at isolated locations in Haryana until January 30. Minimum temperatures across Gurgaon and neighbouring districts are expected to dip by 2–4°C over the next 48 hours before rising gradually by 3–5°C after February 1.
Officials have cautioned that early-morning visibility in Gurgaon and NCR districts could be significantly impacted by the dense fog. Commuters are advised to remain cautious while traveling during morning hours and to stay updated with the latest weather advisories.
