Hailstorms and Unseasonal Rain Lash Marathwada Districts, Crop Damage Feared

Parts of Dharashiv and Latur districts in Maharashtra's Marathwada region were struck by brief but intense spells of moderate rain accompanied by hailstorms on Tuesday evening, aligning with official weather predictions. The sudden weather shift has raised concerns over potential damage to rabi crops currently in the critical harvesting phase across the area.

Affected Areas and Eyewitness Accounts

The hailstorms impacted several talukas, including Lohara in Dharashiv district, as well as Latur city and the Ausa, Nilanga, and Ahmedpur talukas in Latur district. Local residents reported a dramatic change in conditions after partly cloudy skies earlier in the day.

"After partly cloudy skies during the latter half of the day, rain began around 7.30pm along with hail. The spell lasted for more than half an hour, bringing a sudden change in weather," said Amit Washikar, a resident of Latur, describing the unexpected event.

IMD Forecast and Official Warnings

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), isolated light to moderate rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, lightning, and gusty winds, is likely to persist in Marathwada until Thursday. In response, the disaster management department has issued a critical warning about potential lightning incidents over the next 48 hours.

The authorities have urged residents to take necessary precautions, emphasizing the risks posed by the ongoing unstable weather patterns.

Agricultural Impact and Regional Concerns

The unseasonal hailstorms and rain are expected to adversely affect rabi crops, which are at a vulnerable harvesting stage. This weather anomaly could lead to significant crop damage, impacting local farmers and the agricultural economy in the region. The situation underscores the broader challenges faced by rural communities due to erratic weather conditions.

As Marathwada braces for more thunderstorms, residents and farmers remain on alert, hoping for a swift return to normalcy to mitigate further losses.
