The picturesque hills of Himachal Pradesh are bracing for a significant bout of severe winter weather. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a comprehensive alert, forecasting widespread snowfall, rainfall, and a cold wave across the state until January 2, 2024. This advisory has put district administrations and disaster management authorities on high alert, urging residents and tourists to exercise extreme caution.
IMD Issues Detailed Forecast and District-Wise Warnings
According to the latest bulletin from the meteorological office, the western disturbance active over the region is the primary driver behind this intense weather spell. The IMD has predicted light to moderate rainfall or snowfall at many places on December 31st and January 1st. Specifically, isolated heavy rainfall or snowfall is very likely over several districts.
The forecast places Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, Sirmaur, Solan, and Lahaul & Spiti under a yellow watch for heavy precipitation on December 31st. The alert intensifies for January 1st, with an orange alert for heavy snow/rain issued for Chamba, Kangra, Kullu, Mandi, Shimla, and Lahaul & Spiti. A yellow watch remains for Solan and Sirmaur districts on the same day.
Furthermore, the IMD has warned of dense fog in the plains and low-lying areas of the state during the morning hours for the next three days, which will severely impact visibility and road travel.
Cold Wave Conditions Grip the State
Accompanying the precipitation is a sharp drop in temperatures, leading to cold wave conditions. The IMD has stated that cold wave conditions are very likely in isolated pockets of the state until January 2. Key tourist destinations and high-altitude areas are expected to experience severe cold.
On Sunday, Keylong in Lahaul and Spiti district recorded a minimum temperature of minus 8.2 degrees Celsius, while Kalpa in Kinnaur registered minus 1.2 degrees Celsius. The state capital, Shimla, saw a low of 4.2 degrees Celsius. These temperatures are set to plunge further as the cold wave tightens its grip, raising concerns for vulnerable populations and livestock.
Authorities on High Alert and Advisory for Public
In response to the IMD's warnings, the state disaster management authority and district administrations have activated their response protocols. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation, especially in high-altitude and remote regions like Lahaul and Spiti, which are often cut off during heavy snowfall.
The public, particularly travelers and tourists, have been strongly advised to:
- Avoid non-essential travel to the higher hills and passes during the alert period.
- Check weather and road conditions before embarking on any journey.
- Be prepared for sudden road closures, especially on routes like the Rohtang Pass and other high-altitude corridors.
- Take necessary precautions against the biting cold, including using adequate winter clothing and heating facilities.
This weather system marks a vigorous start to the new year for Himachal Pradesh, testing the preparedness of its infrastructure and resilience of its people. The combined threat of heavy snow, rain, fog, and a cold wave necessitates heightened awareness and adherence to official advisories to ensure safety and minimize disruptions.
