Kolkata's Chill Eases Slightly: Temperature Rises to 14°C After Two Cold Days
Kolkata's Cold Spell: Temperature Rises to 14°C, Fog Persists

Residents of Kolkata experienced a slight respite from the biting cold on the last Sunday of the year, as the city's minimum temperature climbed to 14 degrees Celsius. This comes after two consecutive days where the mercury had dipped below the 13-degree mark, creating a pronounced winter chill.

Sunday's Weather and the Chilly Feel

Despite the rise in the minimum reading, the day still felt distinctly cold. This was attributed to a combination of a persistent northwesterly wind and a layer of shallow fog that blanketed the city. The maximum temperature recorded on Sunday was 21.4 degrees Celsius, which is notably four degrees below the normal average for this time of year. A scientist from the Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) explained that this sharper-than-usual drop in the day's high temperature significantly contributed to the overall chilly sensation experienced by Kolkatans.

Forecast for the Coming Days

The weather office has indicated that the relief might be short-lived. On Monday, the minimum temperature could once again fall to around 13 degrees Celsius. Areas like Salt Lake and Dum Dum are also expected to record similar temperatures. However, a change is on the horizon for New Year's Eve. The RMC predicts that by December 31, the minimum temperature could rise by a degree, reaching the 14°C to 15°C range.

Fog and Cloud Cover Predictions

The meteorological department has stated that shallow to moderate fog conditions are likely to persist across Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal for the next two to three days. This fog, along with the cool winds, will continue to keep the atmosphere feeling cold. The anticipated rise in temperature around the New Year is linked to a possible increase in cloud cover over the region, which could trap some heat. Until that cloud cover develops, the city will remain under the influence of the chilly northwesterly winds and shallow fog.

In summary, while Kolkata saw a minor uptick in temperature, the winter conditions are firmly in place. Citizens should prepare for another cold night on Monday before a slight warming trend as the year comes to a close.
