Leopard Attack in Hosapete Kills 36 Lambs, Causes Severe Financial Loss

Panic has spread among villagers in Hosapete taluk of Vijayanagara district after a leopard killed 36 lambs on Thursday night near Nagalapura Thanda. The incident has dealt a devastating financial blow to the affected shepherd family, with losses estimated at around Rs 3 lakh.

Details of the Tragic Incident

The lambs belonged to Garagamallappa, a shepherd from Gollarahatti village in Kudligi taluk. According to local reports, the leopard attacked the flock while it was grazing in a field near Nagalapura Thanda on January 29. On that day, the men who typically shepherd the sheep had gone to a fair in the nearby Byalakundi village, leaving the women to oversee the flock.

The women, fearing for their own safety, were reportedly unable to intervene when the leopard struck. This tragic event highlights the vulnerabilities faced by livestock farmers in the region, especially when unexpected circumstances arise.

Financial and Livelihood Impact

The death of 36 lambs has severely impacted the family, which depends entirely on sheep rearing for its livelihood. Several farmers and shepherds in the area have expressed concern, noting that this incident exacerbates the existing hardships faced by those engaged in livestock farming. The estimated loss of Rs 3 lakh represents a significant portion of their annual income, potentially threatening their economic stability.

Increased Leopard Sightings and Growing Fear

Residents have pointed out that leopard sightings have increased over the past few months in villages such as Gollarahalli and Devalapur. The animal is often seen during early mornings and evenings, spreading fear among farmers. Many are now hesitant to venture into fields or graze their cattle, which could further affect agricultural and pastoral activities in the region.

Villagers Demand Immediate Action

In response to the attack, villagers are urgently calling on the forest department to take several measures. Their demands include:

  • Immediate capture of the leopard to prevent further attacks.
  • Increased patrols in vulnerable areas to enhance safety.
  • Timely compensation for the affected shepherds to help them recover from their losses.

The community emphasizes that proactive steps are necessary to protect both human lives and livestock, ensuring that such incidents do not recur in the future.
