Mormugao Municipal Council Takes Stand Against Coal Handling, Seeks Chief Minister's Intervention
In a decisive move, the Mormugao Municipal Council (MMC) convened a special meeting on Wednesday and unanimously resolved to ban coal handling operations at Mormugao Port. The council has further decided to meet Chief Minister Pramod Sawant to seek a final decision on implementing a total prohibition, addressing long-standing concerns over environmental degradation.
Protest and Unity in Black Attire
Councillors from the Mormugao constituency attended the meeting dressed in black, holding placards that read "Say no to coal, amka kolso naka," symbolizing their protest against rising coal dust pollution. This visual demonstration underscored the community's frustration with the adverse health and environmental impacts linked to coal operations.
Of the 25 council members, 19 were present at the meeting, alongside senior administrative officials, police representatives, and members of the Goa State Pollution Control Board. Notably, officials from the Mormugao Port Authority and coal companies were absent, a point that drew sharp criticism from attendees.
MLA Alina Saldanha Amonkar's Strong Condemnation
MLA Alina Saldanha Amonkar condemned the absence of port authority and coal company representatives, urging the MMC chief officer to revoke licences issued to the port authority for failing to take action against coal firms. "My fight against coal dust pollution and foul smell will continue until coal import stops," she declared, emphasizing her unwavering commitment to environmental justice.
Questions Raised on Pollution Monitoring and Consultation
During the meeting, councillors raised serious questions about the effectiveness of pollution monitoring systems in place. They alleged a lack of proper consultation by authorities regarding coal handling activities, highlighting gaps in governance and public engagement. Key concerns included:
- Inadequate measures to control coal dust emissions.
- Failure to involve local stakeholders in decision-making processes.
- Potential health risks to residents from prolonged exposure to pollutants.
The council's resolution marks a significant step towards addressing these issues, with a focus on securing a comprehensive ban through higher governmental channels. The outcome of the proposed meeting with Chief Minister Sawant is eagerly awaited by the community and environmental advocates alike.
