Nagaland Minister Flags Forest Fires, Hunting as Threats

Nagaland's environment, forests and climate change minister CL John has identified forest fires, particularly jungle burning for cultivation, as a significant cause of environmental degradation in the state. Speaking at a World Environment Day programme at the Kohima Peace Memorial and Eco Park on Friday, John expressed deep concern over the continued prevalence of hunting, emphasizing that forests require birds and wildlife to maintain ecological balance.

Call for a Conservation Movement

The minister called for a conservation movement, drawing a parallel with the abandonment of headhunting practices in the state. He urged society to work towards ending the hunting of animals and birds, and stressed that students and youth must play a leading role in creating awareness and driving positive change.

Impact of Global Warming

John pointed out that rising temperatures in Kohima, Dimapur, and other parts of the state are visible effects of global warming. He reminded citizens that the government has already banned single-use plastics as part of efforts to reduce environmental pollution.

Expressing concern over poor waste disposal habits, he observed that while Nagas are known for their good dressing sense, civic sense often remains lacking. He cited widespread littering of plastic bottles, tobacco sachets, and other waste in public places, urging citizens to adopt responsible habits and work collectively toward maintaining a cleaner and greener Nagaland.

Waste-to-Resource Initiative

On the same day, the Nagaland municipal affairs department conducted a 'Waste-to-Resource' drive at the Secretariat Plaza in Kohima to promote sustainable waste management practices and strengthen public awareness on environmental conservation through resource recovery and recycling.
