A severe cold spell continued to grip Odisha on Sunday, with several parts of the state recording remarkably low temperatures. The mercury plunged to a chilling 3.5 degrees Celsius in G Udayagiri, located in the Kandhamal district, marking the coldest spot in the region.
Temperature Plunge Across the State
Following closely, Phulbani recorded the second-lowest minimum temperature of 6 degrees Celsius. The state capital, Bhubaneswar, experienced a comparatively milder but still cool night with the minimum temperature settling at 13.1 degrees Celsius. The cold conditions were exacerbated by dense fog in Phulbani and Rourkela, reducing visibility and adding to the winter woes of residents.
IMD Forecast: No Immediate Relief
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a forecast that offers little hope for those seeking warmth. The weather bureau has predicted that there will be no relief from such cold conditions for the next three days. The prevailing cold wave and foggy mornings are expected to persist across the state.
A Glimmer of Hope Later This Week
However, a slight reprieve is on the horizon. After the next three days, the IMD anticipates a marginal rise in night temperatures. The forecast indicates that night temperatures will witness a rise by 2-3 degrees Celsius, which could bring some respite from the intense cold. Authorities advise citizens, especially the vulnerable and elderly, to take necessary precautions until the conditions improve.
