Qatar Airways Extends Loyalty Status for 2026 Due to War

Qatar Airways Announces Privilege Club Status Extensions for 2026 Amid Regional Turmoil

Qatar Airways, a premier Middle Eastern carrier, has issued clarifications regarding the extension and renewal of its Privilege Club loyalty program status for the year 2026. This move comes in response to significant disruptions in Middle Eastern airspace, triggered by the ongoing conflict involving the US, Israel, and Iran, which has led to widespread flight cancellations and rescheduling since February 28, 2026.

Operational Halt and Safety Measures

In an email to subscribers, Group CEO Hamad Al-Khater explained that the Qatar Civil Aviation Authority decided to close Qatari airspace following the outbreak of conflict in the region. This prompted the immediate suspension of scheduled operations. Al-Khater emphasized that every decision was guided by the paramount principle of ensuring the safety of passengers and staff. While a full operational schedule has not yet been restored, the airline reports that flight offerings are gradually increasing daily, pending necessary authority approvals.

Privilege Club Tier Status Extensions

To address the travel disruptions affecting members, Qatar Airways will implement tier status extensions for all Privilege Club members whose status was due for renewal during this period. Eligible members will be contacted via email with further details in the coming days. Al-Khater also highlighted that the airline is prioritizing the resolution of open bookings, refund requests, and unresolved complaints, with each case being actively worked on by the team.

Overview of Qatar Airways Privilege Club

Qatar Airways, renowned for its luxury offerings and ranked as the best airline by Skytrax in 2025, operates the Privilege Club, a free-to-join loyalty program. This program rewards frequent flyers with benefits that escalate based on flight activity. Members earn air miles, specifically Qpoints and Avios, to unlock perks. Qpoints are accumulated over 12 or 24 months and determine loyalty status, earned through booking classes, routes, vacation packages, shopping at Qatar Duty Free, and spending with partner credit cards. Avios are easier to collect as members ascend tiers and can be earned via flights with partner airlines, hotel stays, car rentals, or credit card spending.

Privilege Club Tiers and Benefits

The Privilege Club features four tiers, each with distinct benefits:

  • Burgundy: 100% mileage per family member on eligible flights, 10% discount on seat selection, ability to shop and pay with Avios, and requires 150 Qpoints in 12 months to upgrade to Silver.
  • Silver: 15kg extra baggage allowance, 25% Avios tier bonus, priority services, lounge access, and requires 300 Qpoints in 12 months to upgrade to Gold, with retention needing 135 Qpoints over 12 months or 270 over 24 months.
  • Gold: 20kg extra baggage allowance, 75% Avios tier bonus, preferred seats, 40 Qcredits for upgrades, Al Maha 'meet and assist' service, and requires 600 Qpoints in 12 months to upgrade to Platinum, with retention needing 270 Qpoints over 12 months or 540 over 24 months.
  • Platinum: 25kg extra baggage allowance, 100% Avios tier bonus, 60 Qcredits for upgrades, no Avios expiry, and requires 540 Qpoints over 12 months or 1,080 over 24 months to retain status.

Status Maintenance and Recent Changes

Traditionally, Qatar Airways uses a system where each member has an individual tier review date, typically 12 months after their last qualification or renewal. Failure to meet the required Qpoints by this date results in downgrading to the next lower tier, provided there has been account activity in the preceding 24 months. Inactive accounts for two years revert to Burgundy. In March 2024, the airline revised guidelines to allow members falling short of higher tiers to retain benefits at the Burgundy level.

Many members with tier review dates in the first half of the year rely on heavy travel in March and April to earn necessary Qpoints. With itineraries disrupted by the conflict, this strategy has become less reliable. According to the recent directive, affected members may have their status extended by approximately 12 months from the original expiry date. However, for members whose renewal dates fall outside the disruption window, standard renewal rules remain applicable, requiring them to meet usual Qpoints and flight activity thresholds within their qualification periods.

This proactive measure by Qatar Airways aims to support loyal customers during a challenging period of regional instability, ensuring that their loyalty rewards are not compromised by external factors beyond their control.
