US Embassy in Baghdad Issues Critical Security Alert for American Citizens
The United States Embassy in Baghdad has issued an urgent security warning on Thursday, stating that pro-Iran armed groups may carry out attacks in central Baghdad within the next 24 to 48 hours. The embassy has strongly advised American citizens to leave Iraq immediately due to the heightened threat level.
Specific Threats and Previous Patterns of Violence
In an official statement posted on the social media platform X, the embassy explicitly warned, "Iraqi terrorist militia groups aligned with Iran may intend to conduct attacks in central Baghdad in the next 24-48 hours." The alert highlighted that these groups have a documented history of targeting US citizens and locations associated with the United States.
The potential targets identified include businesses, universities, diplomatic missions, energy sites, hotels, and airports. The embassy further cautioned that terrorist militias have previously targeted Americans for kidnapping, with some attackers potentially posing as Iraqi government officials to deceive their victims.
Escalating Regional Tensions and Military Actions
This urgent warning comes amid rapidly escalating tensions across the Middle East region. US President Donald Trump stated on Wednesday that American forces would continue to hit Iran "very hard" over the next two to three weeks, despite claiming that US objectives had already been met or exceeded.
Iran-aligned groups such as the Islamic Resistance in Iraq (IRI) and Popular Mobilisation Forces (PMF) have launched hundreds of drone and missile attacks on US bases in Iraq, including Harir and Erbil. These attacks serve as retaliation for US and Israeli strikes on Iran that began in late February 2026.
Severe Economic Impact on Iraq's Oil-Dependent Economy
The ongoing conflict has created devastating economic consequences for Iraq, particularly in the southern province of Basra where most of the country's oil production occurs. A month into the hostilities, oil fields and ports have experienced significant slowdowns due to frequent rocket and drone activity in the skies.
Iraq depends on oil for nearly 90 percent of its national budget, but exports have been severely disrupted as Iran has effectively blocked cargo movement through the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz. Oil production in southern Iraq has plummeted by more than 70 percent, while imports through ports have dropped by approximately half.
Immediate Actions and Travel Advisory
The US Embassy has emphasized that "US citizens should leave Iraq now" and reminded travelers of the existing Level 4 "Do Not Travel" warning for Iraq. This represents the highest risk category in the US travel advisory system, indicating extreme danger to personal safety and security.
The situation remains fluid and highly volatile, with diplomatic and military developments continuing to unfold rapidly. American citizens in Iraq are urged to heed the embassy's warning and depart immediately while commercial transportation options remain available.
