Congress Slams Government Over Great Nicobar Project

The Congress party has strongly criticized the central government's ambitious Great Nicobar Island development project, warning that it is a 'recipe for ecological havoc' that will destroy coral colonies and irreversibly damage the fragile ecosystem of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands.

In a statement, Congress spokesperson Pawan Khera accused the government of prioritizing commercial interests over environmental conservation. He said the project, which includes a transshipment port, an international airport, and a power plant, would lead to the destruction of pristine coral reefs and mangrove forests.

'The Great Nicobar project is a recipe for ecological havoc. It will destroy coral colonies, disrupt marine life, and threaten the livelihoods of indigenous communities,' Khera said.

The Congress leader demanded that the government immediately review the project and conduct a comprehensive environmental impact assessment before proceeding further. He also called for the inclusion of local tribal communities in decision-making processes.

The government has defended the project, stating that it is crucial for the economic development of the region and that all environmental safeguards are being followed. However, environmentalists and opposition parties have raised serious concerns about its impact on biodiversity.

The Great Nicobar Island is home to unique flora and fauna, including the Nicobar megapode and the saltwater crocodile. The proposed project has been criticized by scientists and conservation groups, who warn that it could lead to irreversible damage to one of India's last remaining pristine ecosystems.
