The Indian Embassy in Oman has confirmed the repatriation of the mortal remains of two Indian nationals who lost their lives in the US strikes on the vessel MT Settebello. The embassy expressed heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families and announced that the remains have been brought back to India.
Details of the Incident
In a statement posted on X, the embassy identified the deceased as Mr. Aditya Sharma and Mr. Shivanand Chaurasiya. The vessel, MT Settebello, came under fire last Wednesday after US forces accused it of violating the naval blockade on Iranian ports. Of the 24 Indian crew members on board, 21 were rescued, while three were later confirmed dead.
Diplomatic Response
External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar spoke with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday, conveying India's strong protest over the US Navy attacks that killed three Indian mariners. He described such actions against commercial shipping as unjustified. On Friday, the Ministry of External Affairs summoned US Charge d'Affaires Jason Meeks to lodge a strong protest against the ongoing attacks on commercial vessels off the coast of Oman.
Prime Minister's Remarks at G7 Summit
At the G7 Summit in Evian, Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed concern over the impact of disruptions in maritime trade through the Strait of Hormuz on the global economy. He noted that several Indian civilians had lost their lives and emphasized that international partnerships and global solidarity can only be meaningful when countries work together to address common challenges. Modi stressed the importance of safeguarding maritime routes and ensuring the security of seafarers involved in global trade.
