After the Meiteis, Naga groups in Manipur have now demanded the abrogation of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement with Kuki armed groups. The demand comes amid rising tensions in the state, with Naga organizations expressing concerns that the truce is being used by Kuki militants to strengthen their positions.
Naga Groups Voice Strong Opposition
Several Naga civil society groups and tribal bodies have called for an immediate end to the SoO pact, arguing that it has failed to bring lasting peace. They allege that Kuki armed groups have been using the ceasefire to recruit new members and expand their influence in areas traditionally inhabited by Nagas.
Demand for Deputy CM's Resignation
In a related development, some Naga groups have also demanded the resignation of Deputy Chief Minister Nemcha Kipgen, who belongs to the Kuki community. The demand stems from allegations that her husband is associated with one of the Kuki armed groups that are party to the SoO agreement. Critics claim this creates a conflict of interest and undermines the government's impartiality.
The SoO agreement was signed between the Government of India, the Government of Manipur, and various Kuki militant groups in 2008. It was intended to bring a halt to hostilities and facilitate peace talks. However, the agreement has been controversial, with many communities in Manipur arguing that it has disproportionately benefited Kuki groups.
Naga leaders have warned that if the government does not address their concerns, they may resort to more aggressive forms of protest. The situation remains tense, with security forces on high alert in sensitive areas of the state.
