Constable Tarun Bali, a Punjab-origin officer serving with the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) in Canada, died after sustaining critical injuries while performing his duty in Ontario province. The incident has sent shockwaves through his hometown of Nangal in Punjab’s Ropar district and among the Indian community in Canada.
Details of the Incident
The Ontario Provincial Police confirmed the death of Constable Bali on Tuesday. He was serving with the OPP’s Dufferin Detachment and had been working in police service for the past two-and-a-half years. At the time of the incident, he was on a special assignment with the James Bay Detachment. According to information released by the OPP, the incident occurred around 12:30 pm on Tuesday near Kendall Concession Road 7 and Concession Road 6 in the Hearst area of Ontario. A police team was carrying out an investigation when Bali sustained severe injuries. Despite efforts by medical personnel to save his life, he later succumbed to his injuries. Another police officer who was with Bali was also seriously injured and remains under medical care.
Suspect in Custody
Police officials stated that an 18-year-old suspect has been taken into custody in connection with the case. Preliminary investigations indicate that the accused had allegedly escaped from a hospital before the incident. Authorities allege that he intentionally rammed a vehicle into the officers, causing the fatal injuries to Bali. The accused has been charged with first-degree murder. Background of Constable Tarun Bali
Tarun Bali hailed from Nangal and was the younger son of Ashok Bali and Neena Bali. The family had earlier lived in Shivalik Avenue, Nangal, before moving to Toronto. About two years ago, Bali married Komal, a woman of Punjabi origin residing in Canada. His untimely death has left family members, relatives and acquaintances shocked.
Body Transport and Tributes
Sources said that Constable Tarun Bali’s body would be transported to the Chief Coroner’s Office in Toronto for post-mortem examination and other legal formalities. In recognition of his sacrifice and service, a special convoy of emergency vehicles is expected to accompany the body during the nearly 10-hour journey to Toronto. Back in Punjab, news of Bali’s death has cast a pall of gloom over Nangal. Residents remembered him as a dedicated and hardworking young man who pursued his dream of serving in law enforcement after moving abroad with his family. Tributes have begun pouring in from members of the Indo-Canadian community, friends and relatives, who described Constable Tarun Bali as a courageous officer whose life was cut short while protecting the public.
