Woman, 70, Killed by Elephant in Chhattisgarh Forest

Raipur: A 70-year-old woman was trampled to death by a tusker while returning from a forest in Chhattisgarh’s Surguja district on Wednesday. The victim, identified as Kailasho Bai, a resident of Kulhadi village, had gone to a nearby forest to collect dori, a seasonal forest produce gathered by villagers during this time of the year.

Incident Details

Forest officials said the woman encountered the elephant while returning home and was unable to escape. The tusker allegedly attacked her, throwing her to the ground and trampling her. She died on the spot. Several other villagers were present in the forest at the time but managed to flee after spotting the elephant, officials said.

Response and Compensation

Following the incident, forest department personnel rushed to the spot and sent the body for post-mortem examination. Immediate financial assistance was provided to the victim’s family as per compensation norms.

Elephant's History

Officials said the tusker has been camping in forests around Kulhadi village for the past two to three weeks. The animal is believed to have moved into the area from Akhora in neighbouring Surajpur district. According to forest department records, the same elephant had earlier been involved in fatal attacks that claimed two lives in Akhora and two others elsewhere in Surajpur district.

Human-Elephant Conflict

The latest death highlights the continuing challenge of human-elephant conflict in northern Chhattisgarh, where solitary tuskers and elephant herds frequently move through forest fringes and village landscapes. Forest officials have advised residents to avoid entering forests, particularly during the ongoing season when villagers venture into the woods to collect mangoes and minor forest produce. Teams are monitoring the elephant’s movement and warning nearby villages to remain alert, officials said.
