Aussie FM Wong Reaffirms Reliability at Framework Dialogue

Australia's Foreign Minister Penny Wong reaffirmed Canberra's commitment to being a reliable partner for India during the 17th India-Australia Framework Dialogue held in New Delhi. The dialogue, co-chaired by Wong and India's External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, focused on deepening bilateral ties across strategic, economic, and people-to-people domains.

Key Highlights of the Dialogue

Both ministers reviewed the progress made under the Comprehensive Strategic Partnership, which was elevated in 2020. They discussed cooperation in defense, maritime security, critical minerals, and emerging technologies. Wong emphasized Australia's dedication to a stable and prosperous Indo-Pacific region, aligning with India's vision for the region.

Economic Cooperation

The Economic Cooperation and Trade Agreement (ECTA) and the Comprehensive Economic Cooperation Agreement (CECA) were central to discussions. Bilateral trade has grown significantly, with opportunities in renewable energy, education, and agriculture being explored.

Strategic Alignment

Wong highlighted the importance of the Quadrilateral Security Dialogue (Quad) and the trilateral Supply Chain Resilience Initiative. Both nations expressed support for ASEAN centrality and the Indo-Pacific Oceans Initiative.

People-to-People Ties

The leaders welcomed the growing educational exchanges, with over 120,000 Indian students in Australia. They also discussed enhancing tourism and diaspora engagement.

The dialogue concluded with a joint commitment to further strengthen the partnership, with the next round scheduled to be held in Australia.
