Europe's Coastal Waters Achieve 89% Excellent Quality in 2025 Report
Europe Coastal Waters 89% Excellent Quality in 2025

When packing for a summer trip to the Mediterranean or Atlantic coast, many of us envision the sound of waves, warm sand, and crystal-clear waters. Our ideal vacation often involves a well-earned break from busy lives to recharge by the ocean. It is easy to spend an entire summer without considering what might be in the water, assuming the sea is safe and clean.

Behind those sun-drenched holiday snaps lies a vast, ongoing operation to monitor the health of coastal destinations. Many holidaymakers worry that their favorite public beaches may be affected by runoff from nearby cities or hidden pollution hotspots. Heavy tourism and overcrowding could take a toll. However, current data shows that Europe's coastal waters are performing exceptionally well, meeting the highest water standards once again.

A Clean Overview of Europe's Bathing Shores

Environmental experts surveyed water samples across Europe for an entire season to assess bathing water cleanliness. With more than 22,000 individual bathing waters analyzed across every EU member state, plus the Balkan and Swiss regions, the European Environment Agency's comprehensive 2025 report examined biological markers such as E. coli to determine safety. The results showed that 89% of European coastal bathing waters were rated excellent.

The strong quality across Europe is even more notable when compared with inland bathing waters. Oceans benefit from tidal flow and natural self-purification, while inland lakes and rivers are more exposed to short-term pollution from heavy rainfall and agricultural runoff. Seaside bathing waters often provide a safer experience for families. In typical summer holiday spots such as Cyprus, Greece, Bulgaria, and Croatia, between 95% and 100% of bathing waters met top quality standards. A simple summer seaside vacation can provide every tourist with an impeccable safety standard.

Decades of strong environmental policies and investments in wastewater treatment have significantly improved water quality, ensuring safe and pristine beaches for millions of holidaymakers. This success story highlights the effectiveness of dedicated management in preserving cherished seaside destinations.

Engineers and Policies Key to Beach Days

None of the high quality of modern-day coastlines is by chance. As confirmed by the European Environment Agency report, high standards result from several decades of strong legal frameworks, along with significant investments by local governments to upgrade wastewater treatment plants and coastal sewage systems. This has reduced the transfer of contaminants from cities into nearby rivers and coastlines.

Following these legislative requirements means coastal towns, villages, and resorts have dramatically altered their day-to-day management of shorelines and bathing waters. Local municipalities are now required to take water samples throughout the bathing season, and any failing site must take immediate corrective action. For hotels and tourist destinations on coastlines, maintaining a clean beach and swimming waters has become an essential economic factor as much as an environmental issue. The report suggests that many European coastlines meet high bathing-water standards.
