Ford to Launch Seven European Models by 2029 to Counter Chinese Rivals
Ford to Launch Seven European Models by 2029

Ford Motor Company has announced plans to launch seven new European models by 2029, aiming to fend off increasing competition from Chinese automakers. The strategy includes a mix of electric vehicles (EVs) and traditional internal combustion engine models, with a focus on the SUV and commercial van segments.

New Models and Electrification Strategy

The upcoming lineup will feature three new electric SUVs, two electric vans, and two plug-in hybrid models. Ford intends to invest heavily in its European operations, including upgrades to its Cologne plant in Germany, which will become a dedicated EV manufacturing hub. The company aims to sell 600,000 electric vehicles annually in Europe by 2026.

Addressing Chinese Competition

Ford's move comes as Chinese carmakers like BYD and SAIC Motor rapidly expand in Europe, offering affordable EVs. Ford CEO Jim Farley emphasized the need to compete on cost and technology, stating, "We must leverage our global scale and engineering expertise to deliver compelling products that resonate with European customers."

Collaborations and Technology

Ford will collaborate with Volkswagen on the MEB platform for some of its EVs, utilizing VW's modular electric-drive matrix. This partnership allows Ford to reduce development costs and accelerate time-to-market. Additionally, Ford is investing in battery technology and charging infrastructure to support its EV push.

  • Two plug-in hybrid models for transitional markets

Ford also plans to expand its connected vehicle services and over-the-air updates to enhance customer experience. The company expects these new models to capture a larger share of the European market, which is projected to see strong EV adoption in the coming years.

With this aggressive product plan, Ford aims to not only defend its market position but also establish itself as a leader in the European EV transition. The first of these models is expected to debut in 2025, with full availability by 2029.
