Gurgaon: June began on an unusually pleasant note, with temperatures remaining significantly below normal after thunderstorms and gusty winds swept across the state over the weekend. The city's maximum temperature settled at 33.5 degrees Celsius, 1.4 notches below Sunday's and 7 notches below normal. The minimum temperature was recorded at 21.4 degrees Celsius, 1.5 notches higher than the previous day's reading but 4 degrees below normal.
The NorthCap University AWS station recorded a maximum temperature of 35.5 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 24.4 degrees Celsius, while the KVK station recorded a maximum of 33.7 degrees Celsius and a minimum of 23.3 degrees Celsius.
Across Haryana, the highest maximum temperature was recorded at Sirsa and Canal Colony Village Ottu (AWS), both at 37 degrees Celsius, while Bhiwani recorded the state's lowest minimum temperature of 20 degrees Celsius. Haryana's average maximum temperature on Monday was 7.4 degrees Celsius below normal. The state's average minimum temperature increased by 1.8 degrees Celsius but remained 3 degrees below normal.
Several districts continued to remain substantially cooler than normal. Karnal recorded a maximum temperature of 29.8 degrees Celsius, nearly 9.8 degrees below normal, while Chandigarh recorded 32 degrees Celsius, around 7.2 degrees below normal. Hisar recorded 36.6 degrees Celsius, Rohtak 34.3 degrees Celsius, Narnaul 34 degrees Celsius, and Bhiwani 34.5 degrees Celsius.
The cooler weather follows a spell of thunderstorm activity across Haryana triggered by a western disturbance. Gurgaon witnessed gusty winds and thunderstorms on Saturday evening, bringing down temperatures across the region. Rainfall activity, however, remained limited on Monday. IMD data showed that Hathnikund Barrage in Yamunanagar received 12 mm of rainfall during the 24-hour period ending Monday morning, while most districts reported no rainfall.
Meteorologists said the recent weather systems have temporarily suppressed temperatures across north India, delaying the onset of typical June heat conditions. The IMD has forecast the possibility of further thunderstorm activity over parts of Haryana till June 5, which is expected to keep temperatures below seasonal averages and provide continued relief from heat stress.
Weather Impact on Daily Life
The unseasonably cool weather has brought relief to residents who were bracing for the typical scorching June heat. The dip in temperatures has reduced the need for air conditioning and cooling appliances, leading to lower electricity consumption. However, the gusty winds and thunderstorms have caused some disruptions, including fallen trees and power outages in certain areas.
Regional Variations
While most of Haryana experienced cooler conditions, there were variations across districts. The western parts of the state, such as Sirsa and Hisar, recorded relatively higher maximum temperatures compared to the eastern districts like Karnal and Chandigarh. The average maximum temperature for the state remained significantly below normal, indicating a widespread cooling trend.
Forecast and Outlook
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has predicted that thunderstorm activity may continue over parts of Haryana until June 5. This is expected to keep temperatures below seasonal averages, providing continued relief from heat stress. Residents are advised to stay updated with weather alerts and take necessary precautions during thunderstorms.
