Kolkata Heat Continues, Slight Relief Expected with Rain

Kolkata: With no significant change in the mercury, the city continued to reel under intense heat and humidity. The Met office has predicted slight relief between Saturday and Sunday, during which the city might experience a spell or two of rain. Even as the southwest monsoon set over the Kerala coast on Thursday, the Met office has not yet announced the monsoon arrival date for Kolkata.

Temperature and Humidity Levels

The maximum temperature surged to this summer's highest of 37 degrees Celsius on Wednesday. While it receded slightly to 36.8 degrees Celsius, the accompanying high humidity continued to make the feel-like temperature touch around 45 degrees Celsius in the afternoon. The night temperature at 29.8 degrees Celsius was close to 30 degrees Celsius for the second consecutive day.

Forecast for the Weekend

“We can expect some thundershower activity in the city and some other parts of south Bengal between Friday and Sunday. However, the expected intensity is likely not to be very significant to make a lasting impact,” said a meteorologist at the Regional Meteorological Centre, Kolkata.

Monsoon Expectations

June 10 is considered the normal date for the monsoon to hit Kolkata after it advances towards north Bengal. While pockets like Salt Lake and Lake Town encountered a spell of rain on Wednesday, Kolkata experienced only drizzles.

Residents are advised to stay hydrated and avoid unnecessary exposure during peak afternoon hours. The Met office continues to monitor the situation and will provide updates as the monsoon progresses.
