United States Secretary of State Marco Rubio, accompanied by his wife Jeanette Rubio, visited the iconic Taj Mahal in Agra on Monday. The visit was a brief cultural stop ahead of the Quad meeting scheduled for Tuesday in New Delhi.
Arrival at the Taj Mahal
Rubio and his wife walked through the great gate, known as the darwaza-i rauza, of the Taj Mahal. This monumental structure serves as a gateway to the mausoleum complex and marks a transition between the Jilaukhana area and the funerary garden. The couple was visibly impressed by the architectural grandeur of the 17th-century marble mausoleum.
Rubio's Reaction to the Monument
Mesmerised by the sight of the monument, Rubio described it as "beautiful" while posing with his wife in front of the Taj Mahal. The couple took several photographs, capturing the serene beauty of the UNESCO World Heritage site.
Accompanied by US Special Envoy
U.S. Special Envoy for South and Central Asia and Ambassador to India Sergio Gor accompanied Rubio and his wife during their four-day diplomatic tour of India. Gor also posed with the couple in front of the monument, highlighting the significance of the visit.
Visitors' Book Remarks
Rubio hailed the Taj Mahal as "a true treasure of the world" in the visitors' book. This book contains remarks from global leaders who have admired the architectural marvel over the years. His words reflected the universal appreciation for the monument's beauty and historical importance.
Security Arrangements
Although the general public was allowed to visit the monument, heavy security personnel from both Indian and American federal agencies were deployed. Strict movement controls were put in place to avert any potential security threats. The presence of security teams ensured a smooth and safe visit for the dignitaries.
Departure from Agra
The brief cultural stop concluded as Rubio departed from the Taj Mahal. He is expected to land at Jaipur airport at 2 pm before the Quad meeting, which is scheduled for Tuesday. The visit underscored the cultural ties between the United States and India, even as diplomatic discussions loomed.
