3 Indian Sailors Missing After Attack Off Oman Coast

Three of the 24 Indian crew members aboard a commercial vessel that was attacked off the coast of Oman on Wednesday are missing. India has strongly condemned the strike and called for an immediate end to the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in West Asia.

Attack on Commercial Vessel Settebello

The attack on the commercial vessel Settebello occurred two days after a Palau-flagged vessel carrying 24 Indians came under attack by the US Navy as the ship attempted to evade the US blockade of Iranian ports. The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed the incident and provided details on the rescue operation.

In an official statement, the MEA said: "We condemn the attack on the commercial vessel Settebello off the coast of Oman, earlier today. Of the 24 Indian crew onboard, 21 Indians have been rescued thus far and three Indians are reportedly missing."

Rescue Efforts Underway

The Indian embassy in Oman is closely monitoring the situation and proactively coordinating with local authorities in the ongoing search and rescue operation. The UK Maritime Trade Operations (UKMTO), a British military organization that tracks vessel movements in strategic waterways, reported that the vessel had one casualty and two missing. Local authorities have also reported a fire in the engine room of the tanker.

India's Call for De-escalation

The MEA emphasized that the continuing incidents of attacks on shipping in the region are deeply worrisome and a direct result of the ongoing conflict in the region. "We reiterate our call for immediate de-escalation of tensions, and the conclusion of ongoing negotiations for a diplomatic solution so that peace and stability can return to the region," the MEA stated.

India further stressed that the targeting of commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure in the region must end, and free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through international waterways must be restored at the earliest, in keeping with international law.
