A young man from Jalandhar, who had been stranded in Dubai for five months without money or a passport, finally returned home on Tuesday. The ordeal began when he traveled to Dubai in search of employment but ended up in a difficult situation after his employer confiscated his passport and refused to pay his salary.
The Struggle Abroad
The youth, identified as 24-year-old Ravi Kumar, had left for Dubai in March with hopes of securing a job. However, upon arrival, his employer took away his passport and forced him to work under harsh conditions. Ravi was not paid for his work and was unable to leave the country without his documents.
For five months, Ravi lived in constant fear and uncertainty. He managed to contact his family in Jalandhar, who immediately approached local authorities and the Indian embassy in Dubai for help. The family spent weeks trying to secure Ravi's release and arrange for his return.
Intervention by Authorities
After persistent efforts by the Indian embassy and the intervention of the NRI Affairs Department in Punjab, Ravi's passport was retrieved, and his employer was compelled to pay his dues. The Indian embassy also facilitated the issuance of an emergency certificate to enable his travel back home.
Ravi's father, a small farmer, expressed relief and gratitude towards the authorities for their timely help. He urged other families to be cautious while sending their children abroad for work and to verify the credentials of employers.
Homecoming
Ravi arrived at the Sri Guru Ram Dass Jee International Airport in Amritsar on Tuesday evening, where he was received by his emotional family members. He looked visibly relieved but exhausted from the traumatic experience.
Speaking to the media, Ravi said, "I am thankful to the Indian embassy and the Punjab government for bringing me back. I never imagined I would be trapped like this. I urge everyone to be careful when going abroad for jobs."
The family has decided not to send Ravi abroad again and will instead help him find local employment. This incident highlights the risks faced by many Indians who travel to Gulf countries in search of better opportunities, often falling prey to unscrupulous employers.
