UN Reports 250 Feared Missing After Rohingya Refugee Boat Capsizes in Andaman Sea

DHAKA: In a tragic maritime incident, approximately 250 individuals, including children, are feared missing after a boat carrying Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals capsized in the Andaman Sea, according to a statement from the United Nations issued on Tuesday. The report, citing Ahsan Tasnim, highlights the ongoing humanitarian crisis affecting displaced populations.

Details of the Capsizing Incident

The vessel, a trawler that departed from Teknaf in southern Bangladesh en route to Malaysia, reportedly sank due to a combination of factors including heavy winds, rough seas, and severe overcrowding. The United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) confirmed these details, emphasizing the perilous conditions faced by migrants seeking better opportunities abroad.

"The trawler, which departed from Teknaf in southern Bangladesh and was on its way to Malaysia, reportedly sank due to heavy winds, rough seas, and overcrowding," the UNHCR stated, underscoring the immediate causes of the disaster.

Root Causes and UN Response

UNHCR and the International Organisation for Migration pointed to deeper issues driving such risky journeys. They noted that the promise of higher wages overseas, often amplified by misinformation disseminated by smuggling networks, compels both Rohingya refugees and Bangladeshi nationals to undertake dangerous voyages.

"This incident reflects the dire consequences of protracted displacement," the UN agencies declared, linking the tragedy to long-term instability and lack of sustainable solutions for refugees.

In response, the UN urgently called for increased international solidarity and sustained funding to support assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh, as well as aid for the Bangladeshi host communities that bear the brunt of this crisis.

"We urgently call on the international community to step up solidarity and sustain funding to support assistance for Rohingya refugees in Bangladesh as well as support for Bangladeshi host communities," they emphasized, highlighting the need for collective action to prevent future tragedies.
