India under Prime Minister Narendra Modi sees itself as a civilisational power with a significant global role, according to former US Ambassador to India Kenneth Juster. Speaking at a recent event, Juster highlighted that India's strategic autonomy and its growing economic and military strength have positioned it as a key player on the world stage.
Strategic Autonomy and Global Ambitions
Juster noted that India's foreign policy under Modi has been characterised by a pursuit of strategic autonomy, balancing relationships with major powers such as the United States, Russia, and China. He emphasised that India's vision of itself as a civilisational power is rooted in its ancient history and cultural heritage, which influences its contemporary global outlook.
"India's approach is not just about being a balancing power but about asserting its own identity and interests," Juster said. He added that this self-perception has led India to take on greater responsibilities in areas like climate change, counterterrorism, and maritime security.
Strong US-India Partnership
The former envoy also underscored the strength of the US-India relationship, describing it as one of the most consequential partnerships of the 21st century. He pointed to initiatives such as the Quad and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum as examples of deepening cooperation.
"The United States and India share common values and interests, and the partnership has grown significantly under both the Trump and Biden administrations," Juster remarked. He expressed optimism about the future of bilateral ties, especially in defence, trade, and technology.
India's Role in Regional and Global Affairs
Juster highlighted India's active engagement in multilateral forums and its role in shaping regional security architecture. He praised India's leadership in the Indo-Pacific region and its efforts to promote a free and open Indo-Pacific.
"India's rise as a civilisational power is not a threat to any nation but a contribution to global stability and prosperity," Juster concluded. He called for continued collaboration between the US and India to address shared challenges and seize opportunities.
