A 45-year-old Indian woman was shot and killed at a supermarket in Virginia, where she had been working for years. The victim, Meghnaben Patel, originally from India's Gujarat state, was fatally shot on the morning of May 23. The incident was captured on CCTV inside the store.
The Shooting Incident
In the surveillance footage, an attacker with his face covered approached the counter where Meghnaben Patel was working. After a brief moment, the man reached into his pockets, pulled out a gun, and shot her. The shooter then scattered items around the store while firing multiple shots before fleeing the scene.
Domestic Dispute Leads to Violence
Local reports from Virginia indicated that the shooting originated from a domestic dispute between a stepfather and a stepson. The incident had no connection to the convenience store or the clerk. Police received a call at approximately 8:13 a.m. regarding a domestic argument in the 3100 block of Blackwood Avenue, off Sewells Point Road in the Greenwood section of the city. Reports stated that a man and his stepfather were arguing, and the younger man, upon leaving the house, turned back and fired a shot into the residence. When officers arrived, they found the 45-year-old stepfather with a non-fatal gunshot wound, who was subsequently taken to the hospital for treatment.
Convenience Store Attack
About 20 minutes later, the gunman arrived at the convenience store, located approximately a 20-minute walk or a five-minute drive from the initial crime scene. The store was mostly empty, with only the clerk at the counter. After a brief conversation, as seen in the surveillance footage, the gunman began firing. Police later received a report of a car left running in the road at an unidentified location. When officers arrived, they found the suspect with a self-inflicted gunshot wound, from which he died. Authorities stated they were not looking for any additional suspects, but the investigation remains ongoing.
