Kerala Technician Trapped on Iranian Vessel for Over 45 Days Amid Regional Unrest
A distressing situation has unfolded for a young Indian sailor from Kerala, who finds himself stranded on an Iranian ship for one-and-a-half months as conflict escalates in the Middle East. Jerin John, a 30-year-old engine technician hailing from Pallippad Parayankeri Kandathil Puthen Veedu in Alappuzha district, is unable to return home, leaving his family in a state of deep anxiety.
Eight-Month Deployment Turns into an Ordeal
Jerin John embarked on his professional journey eight months ago when he joined the Iranian vessel as an engine technician. His contract stipulated a return to India in April, but those plans have been completely derailed by the ongoing geopolitical tensions. The ship's itinerary included travel from Dubai to Iran, where it has remained immobilized.
The living conditions aboard have deteriorated significantly over the past three weeks, with reports indicating that adequate food supplies are no longer available. The crew has been forced to rely on provisions from other passing ships to meet their basic nutritional needs, highlighting the precariousness of their situation.
Communication Breakdown and Family's Desperate Plea
Compounding the crisis is the complete lack of clarity from both the recruitment agency that facilitated Jerin's employment and the shipping company itself. Neither entity has provided any substantive information about a possible timeline for his repatriation or concrete steps being taken to ensure his safety.
"The uncertainty is the most painful part," expressed a family member, who revealed that Jerin can only make phone calls home by sending money through intermediaries. This financial burden adds to the emotional toll of the separation.
In a bid to secure governmental assistance, the family has formally approached Member of Parliament K C Venugopal and MLA Ramesh Chennithala, urging them to intervene diplomatically to facilitate Jerin's safe return. Their appeal underscores the urgency of the matter, particularly given the volatile security environment in the region.
Broader Context: Multiple Malayalis Affected
This case is not isolated. Reports suggest that approximately twelve other Malayali sailors are similarly stranded at an Iranian port, indicating a broader pattern affecting Indian maritime workers in the area. The convergence of these incidents raises serious concerns about the welfare of Indian nationals employed in conflict zones and the adequacy of support systems for their evacuation during emergencies.
The family's anguish is palpable as they await news of a resolution. They continue to hope that through political channels and diplomatic efforts, Jerin John and his fellow sailors will soon be reunited with their loved ones, bringing an end to this harrowing ordeal.
