Mangaluru Mechanic Exonerated After Six-Year Saudi Travel Ban Struggle
In a significant relief, Joseph Cardoza, a 58-year-old native of Moodubidire in Dakshina Kannada district, has finally been cleared of all allegations by Saudi authorities, ending a nearly six-year ordeal that left him stranded abroad. The travel ban, imposed in April 2020, was officially lifted on April 20, allowing him to return home after years of uncertainty and legal battles.
Unexpected Allegations and Legal Hurdles
Cardoza, who spent over 26 years working as a vehicle mechanic for a port-based company in Dammam, Saudi Arabia, faced an abrupt turn in his life when Riyadh police contacted him regarding an alleged financial extortion case. According to PA Hameed Padubidri, a lawyer and social worker based in Riyadh, an unidentified person filed a complaint accusing Cardoza of demanding SR 20,000 (approximately Rs 2.45 lakh) over a phone call, with his mobile number cited as evidence. Cardoza consistently denied the allegations, asserting he had never made such a call.
He was summoned to a police station in Aziziyah, Riyadh, where he fully cooperated with the investigation. Although detained for three days for questioning, preliminary findings indicated no direct involvement, leading to his release, as stated by Hameed. However, despite this, a travel ban was imposed, leaving him stranded in Saudi Arabia. His port access pass renewal was denied, and repeated attempts by his employer to process his exit and re-entry visa failed due to the restriction.
Persistent Legal Efforts and Final Resolution
Over the years, Cardoza was summoned multiple times by the Niyabah (Public Prosecution). Determined to clear his name, he sought the assistance of Hameed Padubidri, who provided crucial legal support and guided him through the complex process. During a recent hearing, Cardoza remained consistent and firm in his statements, which ultimately contributed to the authorities lifting the travel ban and clearing him of all charges.
Reflecting on his experience, Cardoza stated, "I remained patient and confident throughout, knowing I was innocent. I believed truth would prevail." He expressed gratitude to advocate Hameed, as well as Nelson D'Souza and Francis Kundapur, for their moral support during this challenging period.
This case highlights the resilience of individuals facing legal challenges abroad and underscores the importance of legal aid in navigating foreign judicial systems. Cardoza's exoneration marks the end of a long struggle, allowing him to reunite with his family and resume his life back in India.
