Elon Musk: US Gained Immensely from Indian Talent, Warns on H-1B
Musk on Indian Talent in US, H-1B Visa Concerns

Tech billionaire Elon Musk has acknowledged the significant contributions of Indian talent to America's success while highlighting how political divisions and visa system flaws have complicated immigration discussions. The Tesla and SpaceX CEO shared these insights during a candid conversation on Nikhil Kamath's "People by WTF" podcast.

America's Debt to Indian Talent

During the podcast discussion, Kamath observed that for many decades, the United States successfully attracted exceptionally bright individuals, including numerous professionals of Indian origin. Musk strongly endorsed this viewpoint, stating unequivocally that "America has benefitted immensely from talented Indians that have come to America."

When Kamath pointed out that this longstanding trend appears to be shifting in current times, Musk reaffirmed his position, emphasizing that America has been an immense beneficiary of talent from India throughout its history.

Why US Immigration Narrative is Changing

Kamath expressed curiosity about why the United States now demonstrates more anti-immigration sentiments, even sharing his personal experience of anxiety while passing through US immigration. "I passed through immigration and I was worried whether I would be stopped," Kamath revealed.

Musk attributed this shift in perspective to deepening political divisions and the recent surge in illegal immigration across US borders. "There are different schools of thought. It's not unanimous," he explained during their conversation.

The tech mogul specifically criticized the approach taken by the Biden administration, stating "Under the Biden administration, it was basically a total free-for-all with no border controls... You had massive amounts of illegal immigration." He further argued that generous government benefits create what he described as "a diffusion gradient" that attracts more undocumented migrants to cross borders.

Political Polarization and H-1B Visa Concerns

Musk identified that both political extremes contribute to the current immigration tensions. According to his analysis, the left generally supports "open borders, no holds barred," even for migrants with criminal backgrounds. Meanwhile, the right typically believes that immigrants take employment opportunities away from American citizens.

However, Musk questioned this conservative viewpoint, stating "My direct observation is that there is always a scarcity of talented people... More talented people would be good." He acknowledged that some companies prefer hiring cheaper foreign workers, which understandably generates public resentment.

Regarding the specific H-1B visa program frequently used by Indian professionals, Musk recognized existing flaws in the system. "There has been some misuse of the H-1B program... Some outsourcing companies have kind of gamed the system," he admitted.

Despite these concerns, Musk cautioned against implementing extreme reforms, clarifying "I am not in the school of thought that we should shut down the H-1B program. That would actually be very bad." He emphasized that at his own companies, cost reduction isn't the primary motivation for hiring international talent. "We pay above average. We are just trying to get the most talented people in the world," Musk concluded.
