US President Donald Trump has appointed William J. Pulte, currently the Director of the US Federal Housing Finance Agency and Chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, as the Acting Director of National Intelligence. This appointment follows the resignation of former DNI Tulsi Gabbard, who stepped down last month to care for her husband, Abraham Williams, who has been diagnosed with a rare form of bone cancer.
Pulte to Retain Existing Roles
In a post on Truth Social, Trump announced that Pulte would take charge of the intelligence post while continuing in his existing roles at the FHFA and as Chairman of Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac. Trump emphasized Pulte's extensive experience in managing sensitive financial and national responsibilities, stating, "William has deep experience managing the most sensitive matters in America, the safety and soundness of the Markets, and over 10 Trillion Dollars at Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac, a substantial increase from where it was just 12 months ago."
Gabbard's Tenure and Resignation
Tulsi Gabbard, who served as DNI for approximately a year and a half, tendered her resignation to support her husband during his medical treatment. In her resignation letter, Gabbard thanked Trump for the opportunity and assured a smooth transition before leaving office on June 30. During her tenure, Gabbard focused on restructuring the intelligence community, including reducing the agency's size and dismantling diversity, equity, and inclusion programmes. She also oversaw the declassification of over half a million pages of government records related to the Trump-Russia investigation and the assassinations of former US President John F. Kennedy and Senator Robert F. Kennedy.
Pulte's Background and New Role
William J. Pulte brings a wealth of experience from his leadership roles in housing finance, managing trillions of dollars in assets. His appointment as Acting DNI is seen as a strategic move to leverage his expertise in financial oversight within the intelligence community. Trump's post added, "During this period, he will remain Director of the Federal Housing Finance Agency and Chairman of Fannie Mae/Freddie Mac. Congratulations to Director Pulte!"
