NEW DELHI: International connectivity to and from India will experience a significant decline this summer as Air India prepares to suspend approximately 145 additional weekly flights between June and August. These new reductions come on top of nearly 100 daily flights that were already suspended earlier in the summer season. The airline has implemented these cuts to reduce costs amidst spiraling operating expenditures and mounting losses. For passengers, this means even higher fares on the truncated supply this summer, as major Gulf carriers are also operating with reduced capacity.
Impact on Passengers and Alternate Arrangements
Air India has stated that it will attempt to make alternate travel arrangements for affected passengers who had booked tickets on flights that are now being canceled. If alternate arrangements are not possible, a full refund will be provided. The airline encourages passengers to check their flight status and contact customer service for assistance.
Regional Breakdown of Flight Cuts
Region-wise, Air India is cutting the maximum number of flights to and from the East, followed by North America, Europe, and Australia. While some international routes have been temporarily suspended, others will see a reduction in frequency. Specific routes affected include:
- Temporary suspensions: Delhi-Newark, Delhi-Chicago, Delhi-Shanghai, Delhi-Male, Mumbai-New York (JFK), Mumbai-Dhaka, and Chennai-Singapore.
- Frequency reductions: The Delhi-Kathmandu route will see its frequency reduced from 42 times per week to 28 times per week in June.
These cuts are part of Air India's broader strategy to manage its financial health during a challenging period for the aviation industry. The airline continues to monitor the situation and may adjust schedules further based on demand and operational requirements. Passengers are advised to stay updated with the latest information from Air India's official channels.
