Bhopal Metro Launches Non-Fare Revenue Initiatives Amid Persistent Losses
Bhopal Metro Boosts Non-Fare Revenue Amid Losses

Bhopal Metro, grappling with persistent financial losses since the commencement of commercial operations, has embarked on a new strategy to monetize station and coach spaces, aiming to bolster non-fare revenue. In early May, the Madhya Pradesh Metro Rail Corporation Limited (MPMRCL) launched the ‘Celebration on Wheels’ initiative, permitting individuals and event organizers to rent Metro coaches and designated station areas for various events, including birthday parties, kitty gatherings, pre-wedding shoots, film shoots, and advertisements.

Initial Bookings and Cancellations

According to MPMRCL sources, within the first four weeks, two bookings were finalized in Indore, while a booking in Bhopal, which was anticipated to be the first on Saturday, was canceled. The limited commercial operations of the Metro, spanning 7 kilometers and eight stations, have struggled to attract expected passenger numbers since services began late last year, leading to a situation where income is described as a trickle and expenses as a torrent.

Reimagining the Metro as a Public Venue

With fares insufficient to cover running costs, officials view the scheme as a means to reimagine the Metro not only as a mode of transport but also as a modern public venue. In a new pitch, MPMRCL has announced the leasing of commercial space at stations, alongside coach bookings. Available areas include approximately 620 square meters on the ground floor of Board Office Chauraha Metro station and about 2,470 square meters at Subhash Nagar’s ground floor. In nearby Indore, the ISBT Metro Station has around 1,050 square meters listed for commercial licensing.

Limited Traction and Return to Fundamentals

So far, the ‘Celebration on Wheels’ initiative has yet to gain wide traction, prompting officials to revert to fundamental revenue options such as station retail leasing while continuing to promote the event concept as a supplementary income source. The Bhopal Metro’s priority corridor is a 7-kilometer elevated stretch from AIIMS to Subhash Nagar, inaugurated on December 21, 2025, forming the first operational segment of Phase 1. Two lines—the Orange line (AIIMS Bhopal–Karond Circle) and the Blue line (Bhadbhada–Ratnagiri Tiraha)—totaling about 29 kilometers are under construction, with the full Phase 1 expected to be completed by 2028.
