January 2026 Bank Holidays: Swami Vivekananda Jayanti, Republic Day & More
January 2026 Bank Holidays: Full State-Wise List

Indian bank customers need to mark their calendars for a series of closures in January 2026. The month will see multiple bank holidays for regional festivals, national observances, and the usual second and fourth Saturdays. Planning financial activities in advance is crucial as physical banking services will be unavailable on these days.

State-Wise Bank Holiday Schedule for January 2026

The holiday calendar begins with January 12, when banks in West Bengal will remain closed to observe the birth anniversary of Swami Vivekananda. The festive closures continue with January 14, when banks in Gujarat, Odisha, Assam, and Arunachal Pradesh will shut for Makar Sankranti and Magh Bihu.

On January 15, a cluster of southern and eastern states will observe holidays. Banks in Karnataka, Tamil Nadu, Sikkim, Telangana, and Andhra Pradesh will be closed for Uttarayana Punyakala, Pongal, Maghe Sankranti, and Makara Sankranti.

Tamil Nadu will see extended holidays on January 16 and 17 for Thiruvalluvar Day and Uzhavar Thirunal respectively. Later in the month, on January 23, banks in Tripura, Odisha, and West Bengal will close for Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose's birthday, Saraswati Puja (Shree Panchami), Vir Surendrasai Jayanti, and Basanta Panchami.

The major nationwide closure will be on January 26 for Republic Day, when banks across the country will remain shut.

Services Available and Unavailable During Closures

While bank branches will be physically closed on these notified holidays, customers can continue to access a range of digital and self-service options. Online banking services, ATMs, mobile banking applications, and UPI platforms will remain operational for routine transactions like fund transfers and bill payments.

However, services that require in-person interaction at a branch counter will not be available. This includes transactions such as large cash deposits, cheque clearances, and the issuance of demand drafts. Customers are strongly advised to plan any essential banking activities requiring a branch visit ahead of the holiday dates to avoid inconvenience.

Plan Ahead for a Smooth Financial Month

With a packed holiday schedule in January 2026, proactive planning is key. Customers should review their financial needs for the month, schedule any necessary branch visits for before or after the holidays, and familiarize themselves with digital alternatives. Leveraging internet and mobile banking during closure periods can ensure that personal and business finances continue to run smoothly without interruption.
