Kochi man loses Rs 1.43 crore in online stock trading scam

A 74-year-old man from Elamakkara in Kochi has fallen victim to an alleged online stock trading scam, losing a staggering Rs 1.43 crore. The cybercrime police station in Kochi registered a case on Wednesday following the complaint.

Details of the Scam

According to the First Information Report (FIR), the complainant, a resident of Elamakkara, was allegedly deceived by an individual identified as Piyush Sharma. Sharma reportedly convinced the elderly man that substantial profits could be earned through stock market trading. The accused allegedly collected the money through 15 bank transactions conducted between February 26 and March 23.

The complaint further alleges that after March 23, neither the invested amount nor the promised profit share was returned to the complainant. The case has been registered under Sections 316(2) and 318(4) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), 2023. Initially filed at the Elamakkara police station, the FIR was later transferred to the cybercrime police station for further investigation.

Tragic Road Accident

In a separate incident, a five-year-old boy was killed in a road accident at Kalamassery on Wednesday. The child was travelling on a scooter with his grandparents when the vehicle lost control after a collision with a truck.

The deceased has been identified as Aideen Adam, son of Al Amin and a native of Panayikulam. Police said the accident occurred near Premiere Junction around 1:30 pm. Aideen was travelling with his grandfather Jamal and grandmother Beevi on a scooter when the vehicle allegedly attempted to overtake a bus. During the manoeuvre, a truck approaching from the opposite side is suspected to have brushed against the scooter, causing the rider to lose balance.

The child reportedly fell under the bus and suffered grievous injuries. He was rushed to the Government Medical College in Kalamassery, where doctors declared him dead on arrival. Jamal and Beevi sustained minor injuries in the incident. An investigation has been launched into the accident.
