The toll-free ride on the Ganga Expressway connecting Meerut to Prayagraj has officially come to an end. Commuters who enjoyed free travel on this newly inaugurated route will now have to pay a toll fee starting from May 16, 2026. The Uttar Pradesh Expressways Industrial Development Authority (UPEIDA) has announced the new toll rates, which will be applicable for all vehicles using the expressway.
New Toll Rates for Ganga Expressway
According to the official notification, the toll fee for a one-way journey from Meerut to Prayagraj on the Ganga Expressway has been set at Rs 1,500 for cars and other light motor vehicles. For heavy vehicles like trucks and buses, the charges will be higher, ranging from Rs 3,000 to Rs 6,000 depending on the vehicle type and axle configuration. The toll plaza has been set up at multiple points along the 594-kilometer expressway to ensure smooth collection.
Why Was the Toll-Free Period Introduced?
The Ganga Expressway was inaugurated in January 2025 with a 90-day toll-free period to encourage commuters to use the new route and to promote tourism and economic activities in the region. The free ride was extended multiple times due to festive seasons and operational adjustments. However, with the completion of all safety checks and toll infrastructure, the authority has decided to start charging tolls from now.
How to Pay Toll?
Commuters can pay the toll fee via cash, credit/debit cards, or through FASTag, which is the recommended method for quicker passage. The expressway is equipped with automatic number plate recognition systems to facilitate seamless toll collection. UPEIDA has also launched a mobile app where users can check toll charges, pay online, and get real-time traffic updates.
Impact on Commuters
The end of the toll-free period has brought mixed reactions from daily commuters and transport operators. While some appreciate the well-maintained road and reduced travel time from six hours to just four hours, others feel the toll fee is steep. The expressway, which passes through several districts including Badaun, Hardoi, Unnao, and Raebareli, is expected to boost economic growth in the region despite the toll charges.
For frequent travelers, UPEIDA offers monthly and annual passes with discounts. A monthly pass for cars costs Rs 30,000, while an annual pass is available for Rs 3 lakh. These passes can be purchased online or at the toll plazas.
Future Plans for Ganga Expressway
The Ganga Expressway is part of the Uttar Pradesh government's ambitious plan to improve road connectivity across the state. In the next phase, the expressway will be extended to Varanasi and further to the eastern border. The toll revenue will be used for maintenance, expansion, and safety upgrades. UPEIDA has assured that the toll rates will be reviewed annually based on inflation and road usage.
