A domestic worker in Ludhiana was arrested after allegedly stealing gold jewellery worth approximately ₹40 lakh from a family she had worked for over eight years. The theft came to light when a 10-month-old baby's gold bracelet went missing following her shift on April 17.
The Discovery
Farmer Amaninder Singh Grewal reported the 50-year-old woman to the Salem Tabri police after noticing his daughter's gold kada (bracelet) missing. When the domestic worker refused to return to work, the family conducted a thorough search of their home and uncovered a pattern of long-term theft.
The family alleges that the worker had deliberately severed the closed-circuit television wires to avoid detection. A subsequent audit revealed the disappearance of 291 grams of gold jewellery, including necklaces, chains, and earrings, along with cash and an iPhone 12.
Betrayal of Trust
Grewal expressed shock at the betrayal, stating, "We treated her as a loyal worker and supported her financially through her daughter's wedding and her husband's death." He noted that the family initially tried to recover the items privately before contacting the authorities.
Police Action
Head Constable Manoj Kumar, the investigating officer, confirmed that the police arrested the domestic worker and charged her with theft and mischief under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita. The infant's bracelet was recovered from the suspect, and she is being interrogated to locate the remaining stolen property.
The case highlights the vulnerability of trusting domestic help without adequate security measures. The family hopes that the recovery of the stolen items will bring some closure to this distressing incident.
