A shocking incident has emerged from Madhya Pradesh's Jabalpur, where a man has been booked for allegedly pronouncing instant triple talaq outside his wife's residence. He also hurled abuses and threatened to kill her after she reported him to the police regarding dowry harassment.

Accused on the Run

The accused, identified as Mohammad Athar Mansoori, is currently absconding. Police officials have confirmed that efforts are underway to locate and apprehend him.

Legal Context

It is significant to note that triple talaq was rendered a criminal offense under the Muslim Women (Protection of Rights on Marriage) Act, 2019. The case has been registered under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), the Dowry Prohibition Act, 1961, and provisions of the aforementioned Muslim Women Act.

Complainant's Allegations

According to the Omti police, the complainant, 30-year-old Farzana Begum, stated that she married Mansoori on February 14, 2023, following Muslim customs. However, within a week of their marriage, her husband allegedly began pressuring her for a dowry of Rs 4 lakh. When she refused to meet the demand, he subjected her to physical and mental harassment.

She further alleged that he later stopped visiting their house altogether. On the evening of February 2, 2024, he came to her house and stood outside, abusing her for reporting him to the police. He allegedly threatened to kill her if she filed further complaints, then pronounced 'talaq' three times and fled the scene.

Additional Incident

In a related development, on June 3, 2024, her mother-in-law reportedly brought a talaqnama (a formal handwritten divorce deed) and handed it over to her. Based on the complaint, a case has been registered against the accused under multiple legal provisions.
