Bezos: For-profit firms do more good than charity; Musk agrees

Amazon founder Jeff Bezos, in an interview with CNBC, stated that his for-profit businesses contribute more to society than his charitable endeavors. Elon Musk appeared to concur with this perspective.

Bezos's Statement

"If I do my job right, the value to society and civilization from my for-profit companies will be much, much larger than the good that I do with my charitable giving," Bezos said. He elaborated, "I get letters from new mothers all the time who say, 'We don't know what we'd do if we didn't have Amazon, thank you,' or what we did in the pandemic when people could actually see what essential service we were providing to them. And that's how Amazon and all companies are creating jobs."

Elon Musk's Agreement

Elon Musk shared the clip of Bezos's interview and signaled his agreement with the sentiment, adding to the ongoing discussion about the role of billionaires in society.

Philanthropic Track Record

Forbes estimates that Bezos has donated over $2.4 billion to charity in his lifetime. Together with his wife Lauren Sanchez, Bezos has pledged $10 billion to the Bezos Earth Fund by 2030, of which $2.4 billion has been given as of February. Additionally, they operate tuition-free preschools and provide temporary housing through the Day 1 Families Fund. In contrast, Bezos's ex-wife, MacKenzie Scott, has donated more than $26 billion to charities, giving away 46% of her total net worth, making her the largest individual donor in 2025.

Public Reaction

Social media users were divided in their responses. Some praised Bezos for his honesty, while others criticized the statement as self-serving. Comments ranged from, "Unless they are donating money to politicians, then they are super generous," to "I'd prefer them have zero philanthropy cause when they do, we end up with mutant ticks." Another user wrote, "Disgusting and deeply hypocritical. For-profit corporations exist to maximize profit, not serve humanity."
