CBI Conducts Raids on Reliance Telecom in Rs 115 Crore SBI Fraud Case
The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) executed search operations on Thursday at the Mumbai office of Reliance Telecom and the residences of two former directors of the company. This action follows the registration of a First Information Report (FIR) against them in connection with an alleged fraud amounting to Rs 114.98 crore involving the State Bank of India (SBI). Official sources confirmed that the raids were part of an ongoing investigation into financial irregularities.
Details of the Raids and Evidence Recovery
During the searches, CBI officials recovered various documents related to loan transactions. The agency acted on a formal complaint from SBI, which alleged that the bank had been defrauded, resulting in a wrongful loss of Rs 114.98 crore. According to the CBI statement, SBI was a member of a consortium comprising 11 banks that had collectively sanctioned a total term loan facility of Rs 735 crore to Reliance Telecom Ltd.
The investigation is currently focused on examining banking records, internal approvals, and correspondence associated with the loan disbursal process. Further legal actions will be determined based on the findings from this ongoing probe, with searches continuing as part of the comprehensive inquiry.
Broader Context of Reliance Group Investigations
This case emerges amid a series of broader investigations into alleged financial irregularities involving companies linked to the Reliance Group. Earlier this month, the CBI questioned Anil Ambani, the former chairman of Reliance Communications, for several hours in a separate case related to an alleged fraud of Rs 2,929 crore. These developments highlight increasing scrutiny on corporate governance and financial practices within the group.
The CBI's proactive measures underscore the agency's commitment to addressing financial crimes and ensuring accountability in the banking sector. As the investigation progresses, more details are expected to surface regarding the extent of the alleged fraud and the roles of individuals involved.
