Chandigarh MC sets record revenue target of ₹461 crore

The Chandigarh Municipal Corporation (MC) has set an ambitious revenue target of ₹461 crore for the financial year 2026-27, marking the highest-ever projection in its history. This represents a significant increase from the ₹390 crore collected in the previous fiscal year of 2025-26.

Key Revenue Drivers

The enhanced target is underpinned by expected gains across major revenue heads, including water charges, garbage collection fees, property tax, advertisement revenue, and electricity tax. Water charges and garbage collection are again projected to be the largest contributors, with an estimated ₹198 crore for 2026-27, up from ₹188.54 crore in the previous year—a rise of over ₹9 crore.

Pressure to Boost Internal Resources

Sources indicate that with the 4th Delhi Finance Commission grant ruled out, the MC is under significant pressure to strengthen its own revenue streams. Officials noted, "Despite higher grant-in-aid from the UT administration, rising expenditure has made it imperative to maximise internal resource generation."

Broadening Revenue Base

Facing persistent challenges in revenue realisation, the MC has widened its basket of income sources this year. It has added new components while aiming to improve collections across existing ones to meet growing financial and developmental commitments. The civic body is focusing on better compliance and efficiency to achieve the record target.
