Chennai LPG Crisis: Server Glitches Trigger Widespread Panic Booking
As Chennai residents struggled to book LPG refills online or over the phone on Wednesday, widespread anxiety gripped the city over the availability of domestic cylinders. Gas suppliers, however, insisted that the disruption was due to overloaded booking systems rather than an actual shortage, assuring consumers that services would stabilize in the coming days.
Official Responses: Conflicting Accounts from Gas Companies
Bharat Gas officials acknowledged a server glitch caused by an unusual surge in bookings. Chitransh Vipul, sales manager at Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd, explained, "The system faced an unusual spike in requests. The situation improved by Wednesday and should return to normal in the next two days." He attributed the problem to panic booking that compounded technical issues.
In contrast, Indane denied any system failure. Rajasekar Rajaram, PRO at Indian Oil Corporation Ltd which owns Indane, stated, "Our booking system is functioning normally." This official stance, however, contradicted numerous customer reports of booking failures.
Customer Experiences: Widespread Booking Failures and Frustration
Many Indane customers reported experiences that suggested significant system problems. S Vinoth from Kundrathur, who hadn't booked an Indane cylinder in six months, described his ordeal: "When I tried booking on Tuesday, the IVRS said there was a technical glitch. The call was then disconnected. The second time, the number was switched off. This has never happened before."
A Sam from Perungalathur, who placed a refill request a week ago, has yet to receive his cylinder delivery. "I got a message saying it would arrive in three days, followed by another SMS showing a revised price but no confirmation. When I tried checking the booking status on the IVRS, it was unreachable," he explained.
Other residents faced similar hardships. K Shivani of Anna Nagar reported being unable to book a refill with Bharat Gas for two consecutive days. "We keep facing repeat failures on apps and customer care numbers. Even local distributors aren't responding," she lamented.
Technical Breakdown: Overloaded Systems and Communication Failures
The crisis revealed multiple points of failure in the LPG booking infrastructure:
- IVRS systems becoming unreachable or disconnecting calls
- Mobile applications failing repeatedly during booking attempts
- Customer care numbers being switched off or unresponsive
- Local distributors failing to respond to customer inquiries
- Conflicting SMS messages about delivery timelines and pricing
Market Dynamics: Panic Booking Exacerbates Technical Issues
Industry officials noted that panic booking had significantly worsened the situation. The unusual surge in requests overwhelmed already strained systems, creating a vicious cycle where technical failures prompted more frantic booking attempts from anxious consumers. This phenomenon particularly affected households that had delayed refills for extended periods, suddenly rushing to secure cylinders amid the uncertainty.
Resolution Timeline: Promises of Normalcy Within Days
Despite the widespread disruption, gas company officials maintained optimism about a quick resolution. Bharat Gas representatives confirmed that the situation had already improved by Wednesday and projected complete normalization within the next 48 hours. The companies emphasized that there was no actual cylinder shortage, only temporary booking system challenges that would be resolved through technical adjustments and reduced consumer panic.
The incident highlights the vulnerability of essential service delivery systems during periods of unexpected demand spikes, raising questions about infrastructure resilience and communication protocols during service disruptions.
