After the success of the recent '5 match T20 International event - Austria Tour of Germany,' the Deutscher Cricket Bund (DCB) is set to launch its ambitious domestic calendar for 2026. The German Super League - Berlin edition will commence on June 8 at Mayfeld, near the iconic OlympiaStadion, featuring 43 T10 matches among 10 top Berlin clubs. Legendary English umpire Billy Bowden will officiate the final as a special guest.
Strengthening Domestic Structure
DCB President Mr. Severin Weiss emphasized the importance of a robust domestic framework: "In order to have a robust system, we need to have a strong domestic structure. It's not about just having premier leagues and international contests, but building bottom up. And that's what our core focus and mission is." He highlighted that attracting more native participants is crucial for cricket's growth in Europe, particularly in Germany. Organizing high-quality, well-produced domestic events will help achieve this goal in the coming years.
Comprehensive Calendar for 2026
DCB CEO Mr. Dieter Voight outlined the calendar: "In 2026, with strong collaboration and support of our regional partners, we have plans to conduct up to 8 domestic tournaments with about 300 matches. Add to this, we have 4 international events, the biggest being the Nordic Cup in August." The Nordic Cup will feature five women's teams, including hosts Germany and Nordic national teams from Finland, Sweden, and Denmark. Additionally, Germany will host a bilateral event against Switzerland women's in July.
Aspiring for Higher Rankings
Germany aims to break into the top 30 of the ICC men's T20 rankings. After a 4-1 series win against Austria, the team hopes to maintain its dominance. Donovan Miller has been appointed head coach, bringing experience from English Counties and top franchise tournaments. Captain Musadiq Ahmed, who was sensational against Austria and named Man of the Series, has the full support of DCB to lead the team to greater success.
Strategic Marketing and Digital Reach
DCB is focused on marketing events and positioning German cricket as a serious destination in Europe. Dr. Vignaesh Sankaran, Vice President of DCB, stated: "Live broadcasting is only one part of the equation. Equally important is how we market our events, players, coaches, and sponsors to a wider audience." The Austria-Germany series generated over five million impressions across platforms. With partner SMW Global, German influencer Liz Laz introduced cricket to new audiences, expanding reach. Germany is among the first European Associate Members to combine elite cricket with digital storytelling and influencer engagement, achieving over 150% growth in viewership and attracting some of the largest cricket audiences in Europe.
Partnership with SMW Global Media
DCB has entered a strategic partnership with SMW Global Media as exclusive commercial rights partner, overseeing event production, ground branding, and sponsor asset delivery. Azhan Ahsan, executive director of SMW Global Media, said: "The aim is to produce clean, high quality broadcasts, in decent budgets, allowing our federation partners the flexibility to produce more matches professionally." He added that Germany is perhaps the only European country capable of producing high-quality cricket in such volumes, and consistent supply will expand reach and grow commercial values organically.
The last event was broadcast live worldwide on multiple platforms including FanCode, Action Sports, Unbeaten +, Unbeaten Prime, SportVot, Cricket Lounge TV, and German cricket's official YouTube channel, with coverage by major data partners like ESPN and Olympics.com.
