Dredging Corporation of India Celebrates 50 Years of Maritime Excellence in Visakhapatnam
The Dredging Corporation of India Limited (DCIL) marked a significant milestone on Sunday as it celebrated its golden jubilee in Visakhapatnam. Established on March 29, 1976, as a central public sector enterprise, DCIL has demonstrated remarkable growth and resilience over five decades, evolving into a cornerstone of India's maritime infrastructure.
Five Decades of Growth and National Contribution
From its humble beginnings, DCIL has expanded its revenue from a modest Rs. 200 crore in the early years to an impressive Rs. 1,148 crore in the 2024-25 fiscal year, according to official statements. The corporation currently dominates India's maintenance dredging sector, handling approximately 80 percent of the nation's total volume. This translates to about 120 million cubic metres out of the annual 150 million cubic metres, playing a critical role in keeping India's ports operational and efficient.
Ministerial Praise and Vision for the Future
In a special video message, Union Minister of Ports, Shipping and Waterways Sarbananda Sonowal commended DCIL for its vital role in building India's maritime strength over five distinguished decades. Minister of State Shantanu Thakur, also addressing the celebration via a pre-recorded message, lauded DCIL as a "steadfast lighthouse illuminating India's vast channel of ports, thereby designing the country's maritime destiny."
Vijay Kumar, Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways, highlighted DCIL's strategic diversification into new business areas. "DCIL is actively exploring submarine cable trenching, offshore wind energy support, and inland waterways development, which will chart its future growth trajectory," he stated, underscoring the corporation's forward-looking approach.

The golden jubilee event, presided over by Dr. Madhaiyaan Angamuthu, Chairman of DCIL and the Visakhapatnam Port Authority, brought together employees, former staff, and key stakeholders. Dr. Angamuthu outlined an ambitious long-term vision, stating, "Our vision aligns with the nation's aspirations. By 2047, as India celebrates 100 years of independence, we envision DCIL as a globally recognised leader in dredging services, extending our expertise beyond national boundaries and contributing to sustainable maritime infrastructure worldwide."
Capt. S. Divakar, Managing Director and CEO of DCIL, reflected on the corporation's journey, calling it "a story of growth, resilience, and nation-building." He emphasized that DCIL's five decades of operation represent a proud commitment to strengthening India's maritime infrastructure, which has been integral to the country's economic development.
