Toll Collection Resumes at Ganeboil Plaza in Belagavi with Fully Automated FASTag System
After a suspension lasting several days due to a workers' strike, toll collection at the Ganeboil toll plaza on National Highway 48 in Belagavi has officially resumed as of Saturday evening. The resumption marks a significant shift, with operations now being conducted entirely through a fully automated FASTag system, minimizing human involvement and enhancing efficiency for motorists.
Strike Disruption and Revenue Losses
The disruption began on March 14, when approximately 25 employees initiated a work stoppage to demand minimum wages and improved facilities. During the protest, toll barriers were kept open, allowing thousands of vehicles to pass without payment, leading to substantial revenue losses for the authorities.
With the financial impact mounting, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI) stepped in to intervene and restore normal operations. From Saturday onwards, toll collection has been fully automated using FASTag technology, with temporary staff deployed only where necessary to assist in the transition.
Contractor Issues and Future Plans
Authorities have issued a notice to the previous contractor over alleged mismanagement and confusion related to salary issues that contributed to the strike. As a result of the plaza's reopening, toll-free travel on the Belagavi–Panaji stretch has now ended, requiring motorists to pay via FASTag as usual.
Officials have announced that a fresh tender process will be initiated soon to appoint a new contractor. This move aims to streamline operations and address the concerns raised by employees, ensuring better management and compliance with wage regulations in the future.
The transition to a fully automated system is expected to reduce such disruptions and improve the overall toll collection process on this key highway route.
