Government Reassures on Crude Oil, Flags LPG Concerns Amid Regional Tensions
In a recent inter-ministerial media briefing, the Indian government addressed the nation's energy security, highlighting a stable crude oil supply while expressing ongoing worries about liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) availability. The statements come against the backdrop of escalating conflicts in West Asia, which have raised global concerns over energy disruptions.
Crude Oil Operations Running Smoothly
Sujata Sharma, Joint Secretary (Marketing & Oil Refinery) at the Ministry of Petroleum and Natural Gas, confirmed that India's crude oil availability remains normal, with refineries operating at optimal levels. This assurance aims to alleviate fears of potential shortages, as the country relies heavily on imports to meet its energy demands. The government emphasized that no dry outs have been reported at retail outlets, urging citizens to avoid panic buying and maintain regular consumption patterns.
LPG Supply Issues Persist
Despite improvements in online booking systems, Sharma noted that LPG distribution continues to be a significant concern, with long queues observed at distributor points. The situation has been exacerbated by the West Asia conflict, which impacts global supply chains. However, domestic LPG production has seen a notable increase of 40 percent in recent days, offering some relief. Authorities are actively monitoring the scenario to prevent any severe shortages and ensure steady availability for households and commercial users.
Push for Alternative Fuels and Infrastructure
To mitigate reliance on conventional LPG, the government is accelerating efforts to promote Piped Natural Gas (PNG) and expand city gas infrastructure. Several city gas distribution entities are offering incentives to encourage consumers, especially in major urban areas, to switch to PNG. Additionally, the Centre has requested state governments and Union Territories to expedite approvals for laying CGD pipelines, aiming to reduce procedural bottlenecks and enhance fuel accessibility.
Support Measures and Sectoral Adjustments
In response to the LGP supply challenges, alternative fuels such as kerosene and coal have been activated for specific sectors, including hospitality and restaurants. This strategic move is designed to ease pressure on LPG supplies and ensure uninterrupted operations in critical industries. Furthermore, the government reassured that aviation turbine fuel stocks are sufficient, with no price increases implemented by oil companies, maintaining stability in the aviation sector.
