Officials conducted inspections of potential sites for river cruise tourism in Bagalkot district, evaluating infrastructure requirements including jetty construction, approach roads, vehicle parking, observation rooms, drinking water, electricity, toilets, and security arrangements needed for tourists, according to a statement from the district administration.
Infrastructure Planning for River Tourism
The inspection team, comprising tourism department officials and local authorities, assessed multiple locations along the Krishna and Ghataprabha rivers. They identified key areas suitable for developing cruise terminals and passenger amenities. The team emphasized the need for seamless connectivity between proposed jetties and major tourist attractions in the region.
District Tourism Officer S. Patil said, "We are focusing on creating a comprehensive river tourism circuit that will connect historical and cultural sites in Bagalkot. The initial assessment covers five potential jetty locations." The inspection covered areas near Badami, Aihole, and Pattadakal, all UNESCO World Heritage sites or proposed sites.
Proposed Amenities and Security Measures
The officials discussed detailed plans for tourist facilities at each location. Each jetty site would require dedicated approach roads, parking for at least 50 vehicles, observation rooms with river views, and round-the-clock security. Drinking water and electricity connections would be established, along with modern toilet blocks. The estimated cost for developing each jetty site is approximately ₹2 crore, according to preliminary estimates.
Local MLA Ramesh Jigajinagi said, "River cruise tourism will create employment opportunities for local youth and boost the economy of Bagalkot district. We are committed to completing the project within 18 months." The project is part of the Karnataka government's broader initiative to promote water-based tourism across the state.
Environmental and Safety Assessments
The inspection team also conducted environmental impact assessments, ensuring that construction would not harm river ecosystems. Safety protocols for cruise operations were discussed, including life jacket requirements, emergency response plans, and navigation guidelines. The district administration will consult with the Karnataka State Pollution Control Board before finalizing construction plans.
Officials noted that river cruise tourism could attract both domestic and international tourists, particularly those interested in exploring the Chalukya heritage sites. Bagalkot district receives over 5 lakh tourists annually, and the river cruise project is expected to increase this number by 20% within two years of operation.
Next Steps and Timeline
The district administration will prepare a detailed project report (DPR) within three months, followed by tendering for construction. The first phase targets completion by December 2027, with trial cruises expected to begin in early 2028. The Karnataka Tourism Department will provide funding under the state's tourism infrastructure development scheme.
